Leaving behind the familiar streets of Huntsville, Alabama, where I had spent seven years building cherished bonds, was a daunting decision. But sometimes, in life, we must step out of our comfort zones to embrace new beginnings.

Hi, I am Amber and this is my journey to SoFete.

In January 2022, with a mix of apprehension and excitement, I packed up my life and set forth on a journey to Maryland, ready to start a new chapter.

My quest for a supportive community where I could freely express my creativity and talents led me on a serendipitous path. It was during this search that I stumbled upon an advertisement calling people with shared ideals, to be part of SoFete, a moment that would change my life forever.

Stepping into this new chapter, my nerves were palpable, but the warmth and acceptance of the SoFete family quickly melted away my apprehensions. Led by Ashanti, Cherelle, and other members, the atmosphere was electric with the vibrant rhythms of cultural music. Encouraged by the supportive environment, I danced with abandon, feeling a sense of belonging wash over me.

Joining SoFete was not just about finding an organization; it was about finding a home. The bond we share transcends differences in size, color, and background, uniting us as one big, diverse family. The support, guidance, laughter, and love we exchange are unparalleled, creating memories that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

What resonated with me most about SoFete was its celebration of diversity and love for culture.

As someone deeply connected to my Jamaican and Barbadian roots, I found solace in sharing my heritage with others. Whether it's through dancing to the rhythm of Soca or savoring the flavors of Caribbean cuisine, SoFete has provided me with a platform to embrace and celebrate my cultural identity.

Returning to Jamaica as an adult was a bittersweet journey, filled with nostalgia and a deep longing for family and traditions. But the opportunity to participate in SoFete's Cultural Exchange Program ignited a newfound excitement. For me, it was more than just a homecoming; it was a chance to reimmerse myself in the vibrant culture that had shaped me. Every moment, from the lively street markets to the intimate family gatherings, reinforced my sense of belonging and left me with memories I'll cherish forever.

My journey to embrace my cultural identity has not always been easy. Growing up in America, I struggled to fully appreciate my heritage, feeling like I didn't fit in as a "regular black girl." It wasn't until I attended college at an HBCU that I learned to embrace my true identity without reservation. Surrounded by a community that celebrated our shared heritage, I found the confidence to fully embrace who I am.

As I continue on this journey, I look forward to sharing my cultural experiences with my soul sister found in SoFete, Karma, and celebrating the richness of our shared heritage. Together, we will continue to dance, laugh, and create memories that celebrate the beauty of diversity and the power of community.

In the end, my journey from Huntsville to Maryland was not just about physical relocation; it was a journey of self-discovery, growth, and finding home in unexpected places. SoFete has not only welcomed me with open arms but has also become a beacon of light in my life, reminding me that home is not just a place but a feeling of love, acceptance, and belonging.
